Observations on what makes Medfield Medfield

Establishing Medfield traditions

There’s a lot to love about Medfield, and the slower post-Christmas pace provides many opportunities for exploring open space, wandering around town, and just finding time to connect with friends and neighbors.

But all of this has been a new phenomenon for me. For years, my husband and I would pack up the kids and we’d drive down to the Jersey Shore to celebrate the holidays with my parents and siblings in our childhood home. It was a tradition that seemed like it would last forever, but then my Dad passed away in the summer of 2012, and my Mom died a year later. My childhood home was put on the market this fall, and on our recent trip to NJ, I couldn’t bring myself to visit the empty house.

How does one create new traditions? I’m still trying to find my way, but living in a tight-knit community like Medfield has made it much easier. It’s the little things that I enjoy most…chatting with people in line at the Post Office as we all wait to get holiday stamps or mail packages…getting hugs from MHS alumni who come back to hear our current students at winter concerts…going to Christmas Mass at St. Edward’s and hearing the beautiful sounds of a trumpet and violin being played by Medfield musicians…stopping into Tilden Village for the holiday feast and giving rides to Bubble Gum Bob (and hearing that the dry cleaner fixed his coat zipper free of charge)…taking our dog for a walk in the Wheelock fields on a sunny winter day and hearing “Happy New Year” time and time again.

It’s these everyday experiences taken together that anchor me into the community of Medfield, and for that I’m very grateful this holiday season.
